In South Africa, government-owned Public Investment Corporation has reportedly increased its stake in MTN Group to 26 per cent. South African media says the PIC is taking advantage of the telco’s 10-year low stock price and an ongoing battle with regulators in Nigeria. But it could also mean that the PIC is shoring up Africa’s biggest telco.

Still in South Africa, the government may start demanding tax from companies like Netflix, Facebook and Google, from April 1, 2019. In a new regulation, the South African National treasury requires all businesses delivering “electronic services” to undergo VAT registration. MyBroadband has more.

Techpoint profiled Curators University, an organisation based out of South Western Nigeria that trains young adults in emerging technologies like blockchain, VR and AR, Data Science, Robotics and AI.

University students in South Africa will competing at the 7th Student Cluster Competition, MyBroadband reports. The goal is to build small high-performance computing clusters on the exhibition floor of the conference from hardware provided, and run a series of benchmarks on their systems. The winning team will get to represent South Africa (and Africa) at the International Supercomputing Conference Student Cluster Competition in Germany in 2019.
