Airtel Africa, a subsidiary of Indian’s Bharti Airtel will receive an investment of USD 200 million from the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) through a primary equity issuance in the company. Six global investors, including Warburg Pincus, Temasek, Singtel and SoftBank Group International, helped Airtel Africa raise USD 1.25 billion last year through a placement of shares.

Rwanda is launching its first telecommunications satellite this year, earlier than its scheduled launch in 2020. The satellite is expected to be launched from the International Space Station(ISS) before 2019’s transform Africa Summit in May.  The launch is in line with an agreement signed between the Rwandan and  Japanese government on Space Inclusion in Africa.

Orange has acquired UK-based SecureData for an undisclosed amount. SecureData, which also operates in South Africa, provides integrated cyber solutions designed to assess risks, detect threats, protect customer’s IT assets and respond to security incidents. The acquisition will expand Orange’s capabilities, particularly in Europe.

Digital Financial Services Lab (DFS Lab) is hosting a hackathon in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from April 8 to 12. The Hackathon will offer participants an in-depth look at Mojaloop, an open-source software for financial services companies, government regulators, and others taking on the challenges of interoperability and financial inclusion. The Zambia Rugby Union (ZRU) is going digital. The union introduced a magazine, a Twitter handle and a website, for the first time ever in its history. Union President, Gen Clement Sinkamba, said the improvement will enable the union effectively interact, update and communicate with all stakeholders.
