A MESSAGE FROM OUR SPONSORS

MainOne’s Nerds Unite 2019 conference is themed “Accelerating Digital Transformation”. This invite-only tech conference targets MainOne’s global, enterprise and start-up ecosystem. It will feature over 20 global and African speakers who will provide insights about tech disruption in Africa and the role of connectivity and cloud services in driving growth. Be part of the conversation by registering here.

Facebook has announced that it is opening it’s first content review center in Sub-Saharan Africa in Nairobi, Kenya. The center will run via a partnership with Kenyan outsourcing company Samasource and will employ approximately 100 reviewers by the end of the year who will support a number of languages, which include Swahili, Somali, Oromo and Hausa.

According to his LinkedIn Profile, Nigerian serial entrepreneur Iyinoluwa Aboyeji is now a general partner at Street Capital, a venture capital firm that seems to be targeting for-profit businesses with a social impact angle. At least that’s the impression I get from the LinkedIn profile of Street Capital MD, Ian Carnavale. If that name sounds familiar its probably because Carnavale co-founded edutech startup Fora with Aboyeji back in 2013. Aboyeji and Carnavale are also among Andela’s co-founders.

TechCabal will be at Nerds Unite today – we have a booth you should totally come check out and we’ll be wearing T-shirts so cool, we’ll be hard to miss. If you don’t already know, it’s happening at Oriental Hotel, VI, Lagos by 10:30am. Come say hi!

Seven people in total have been arrested in a SIM-swapping fraud scandal at South African telco, Vodacom. The illicit swaps have been going on at the teclo’s call centers for some time and investigations have been on since 2017. MyBroadband has more.

Lyndon Rive and Peter Rive, Co-Founders of SolarCity (now Tesla Energy) have been appointed to board and advisory roles at ZOLA Electric (formerly OffGrid Electric). Co-founder Bill Lenihan has also been appoint as the renewable energy firms’ sole CEO. Tesla Energy (then SolarCity) is an early investor in ZOLA Electric.

US-based co-working company WeWork has announced that it will open its first shared workspace in South Africa – and Africa – at The Link in Rosebank, Johannesburg. The listing of the The Link office space on the WeWork website describes an on-site wellness room, “art-filled lounges”, and “bright and airy conference rooms”.

Facebook is revamping the “Why am I seeing this ad?” panel and making it more detailed, per Dignited. Users will now have the ability to know who uploaded their contact information, when it was first uploaded to the site and if the information was shared with a third-party advertising agency.

Facebook has partnered with Vodacom Ghana to launch its ExpressWiFi service in the Gold Coast. ITNewsAfrica has more.
