Cairo-based household shopping app GoodsMart has announced it secured investment from Egyptian venture capital (VC) firm Algebra Ventures in preparation for a Series-B round raise. The investment was concluded in the fourth quarter of 2018. The company plans to further scale its business, upgrade warehouse facilities, expand its team and improve its operational capabilities following the investment.

mSurvey has received a Series A follow-up funds from Proparco, the private sector financing arm of Agence Française de Développement (AFD). mSurvey secured Series A funding in 2018 following investments led by venture firm TLcom Capital. The follow-up funds will allow the company expand its trade to other African countries, in addition to building its infrastructure and partnerships.

Kenyan Internet provider BRCK has bought rival, Surf, to become one of the biggest public Wi-Fi networks in sub-Saharan Africa, TechCentral reports. Currently attempting to raise US$10-million in equity and a similar amount of debt, BRCK plans a network expansion from June when the funding exercise ends.

Well, well, WhatsApp is planning to roll-out a new feature that prevents you from being added to a group without your permission. If you have been added to a group against your will in the past, and were unable to leave for some reason, this is great news although the feature will be available to iOS and Android beta testers for now.

The Africa Netpreneur Prize Initiative (ANPI), founded by the Jack Ma Foundation, will begin accepting applications on March 27th, 2019. The ANPI is a USD$10 million Prize competition for African entrepreneurs. The pitch competition is open to nationals from any African country from any industry sector. The Interactive Advertising Bureau South Africa (IAB SA), in partnership with Meltwater and The Radisson Hotel Group has launched an insight series to foster knowledge sharing and interaction among players in the South African digital landscape. For the first quarter, the series is focusing on ‘The Future of Work.” With one already held in January, the next events are slated for February 22 and March 6.

The African Development Institute of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has opened applications for their Next African Global IT Leaders Program with the backing of the Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation (KOAFEC) Knowledge Sharing Programme (KSP). If you would like to apply, click here to do so. Applications open on March 19 and closes April 9; the portal is yet to be updated.

AirtelTigo has launched AirtelTigo Business, its Business-to-Business arm in Accra, Ghana. AirtelTigo Business connectivity solutions span across Africa, and CEO, Mitwa Kaemba Ng’ambi, says the company is leveraging the infrastructure of its two parent companies-Bharti Airtel and Millicom-to provide end-to-end connectivity for small, medium and large enterprises.

Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, at the Lagos State Annual Public Procurement Summit, has announced plans to launch an e-procurement platform in the next three weeks. Starting with the Ministries of Works, Health and Education, the platform is expected to eliminate corruption in the public procurement of goods and services. Governorship elections come up on March 9 after the national electoral commission postponed polls on the eve of the presidential election.
