AUDACITY, a multi-sensory exhibition comprising audio and visual components of the Tech Women Lagos portrait series and exhibition, will open at the Africa Fintech Foundry in Lagos from March 16, 2019. Tech Women Lagos profiles 50 women in Lagos’ technology ecosystem from different backgrounds and at different stages of their tech careers. We are showing the next generation of girls and women that careers in tech are possible and there is space for them in the industry.

One Finance Limited (OneFi) has secured a US$5 million debt facility from New York and Nairobi-based funding provider Lendable to bolster Paylater’s loan book and transition it into a full service digital bank. The firm has disbursed over $60 million across 750,000 loans since 2016 and approves over 1,500 loans a day with an average of $80 per loan. The facility will fund expansion of projects in Nigeria and entry into new markets.

Angolan mobile network operator, UNITEL, joins the Dangote Group as members of the World Economic Forum (WEF) exclusive network of Partner level companies. They become the only two partners from Africa. The partnership will allow UNITEL to support the mission of the WEF in Africa, get actively involved in the projects and be represented at the 2020 Davos Annual Meeting, Annual Meeting of the New Champions in China, as well as the Regional Summits in Africa and in the Middle East.

Jumia recently filed an IPO with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in plans to be publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange. This Quartz article reflects on the realities of the e-commerce industry following insights from Jumia’s IPO filing.

Naspers is said to be in talks to inject around $200-million into business loan provider Capital Float and payments security firm Wimbo. This is part of a larger plan to spend US$1-billion this year growing fintech companies in India, Techcentral reports. The Cape Town-based investment group is one of the largest technology investors in the world.

MTN Group Ltd. plans to push ahead with an initial public offering of its Nigeria unit in April or May after is resolves a US$2 billion tax dispute. MTN was accused of skipping tax payments in September as well as repatriating funds outside Nigeria illegally.  MTN has denied both accusations and a court hearing has been scheduled for March 26 in Lagos.

Applications are now open for the ninth annual Social Innovation Awards organised by the SAB Foundation. The foundation says it aims to develop products and services which help the South Africa’s most vulnerable communities, while supporting South Africa’s “innovative thinkers and brightest entrepreneurial minds”. A total of US$832,000 (R12-million) in prize money will be distributed to the winners of the challenge. Apply here.

Ride-hailing company Careem, has launched a global in-ride insurance programme to provide free in-ride insurance for both passengers and Captains (drivers) in the 15 countries they operate. Fatalities or accidents resulting during a Careem ride will now be compensated with up to US$20,000.

A new Chrome extension will allow you distill comments on social media. Tune, a product from Jigsaw, a side project of Alphabet Inc. will enable users choose what level of toxicity they can allow in their comments and block those they do not want to see or interact with. Tune’s machine learning algorithms are still experimental, however, but the company is hoping that users can see how they can take charge of their conversations online.
