Guardian reports thatthe Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has concluded process for the disbursement of subsidies to the six licensed Infrastructure Companies (InfraCos) to encourage broadband infrastructure deployment and penetration in the country. The six licensed InfraCos are: MainOne Ltd, Raeana Nigeria Ltd, O’dua Infraco Resources Ltd, Fleek Networks Ltd, Brinks Integrated Solutions, and Zinox Technologies Ltd, while a seventh licence for is being processed the North Central Zone of Nigeria.
In response to the recent Cyclone Idai, a tropical storm that hit the Eastern Highlands in Zimbabwe and caused the loss of lives and properties, PyData is partnering with Impact Hub Harare to host a hackathon focused on creating an early warning system for natural disasters. According to WeeTracker, YCombinator-backed startup Kudi has raised $5.8M in a recent round of funding from Partech. This is according to an SEC filing made on 18th March 2019. The Nigerian payments startup was founded by Adeyinka Adewale and Pelumi Aboluwarin and launched its services in 2017. The startup was selected for the YCombinator program in the same year.

Anonymous sources have told Bloomberg that Uber is set to close a deal acquiring Careem, its major rival in Egypt and most of the middle east. Uber will pay $1.4 billion in cash and $1.7 billion in convertible notes for Careem, according to these anonymous sources. The notes will be convertible into Uber shares at a price equal to $55/share, according to the term sheet seen by Bloomberg.

Google's free Wi-Fi in Lagos and Abuja, and soon to be rolled out in other locations may be illegal, according to the Nation. A letter from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to the Federal Government reporting the situation, indicates that Google is operating without the NCC's license.
Transsionhas applied to raise capital on Shanghai's Technology Board through an Initial Public Offering. The Technology Board was established last November to provide an alternative for Chinese start-ups to raise capital, away from New York and Hong Kong, and Transsion is one of the first companies to kick off the fundraising project.
